Adding a PDF Download File to WordPress
Many WordPress website owners wish to make .pdf (PDF) files available for downloads by users. This could be because these webmasters want to give away a free e-book or make it easy for their visitors to download some type of application. Either way, the latest versions of this popular CMS make this task very easy to accomplish.
By the way, you don’t need a special plugin to add a PDF download to WordPress, but you may choose to do this if you can find one that seems friendly. This CMS already already includes everything you need right out of the box, and should only take you about five minutes to make your document available to the world.
Upload Your File With the Media Manager
Upload the PDF File
Simply use the built-in media manager, which is the same one that you use to upload images, to add your file to your website.
Get the File URL
After you have successfully uploaded your file, you will need to get the URL to the document on your site within the uploads file.
- Visit the Media Library and find your file listed.
- Click through the icon
- On the right side of the page, you should see the full URL. Copy that by highlighting it typing:CTRL+C.
Add the PDF URL to Your Page or Sidebar
In a post or page, you can use the anchor widget to add the link to a reference of your file. When your visitors click on that text in your content, they will get invited to open the document.
You can add a text widget to your sidebar. Simply use code like this:
<a href=http://MYWEBSITE.com/document.pdf>DOWNLOAD THE DOCUMENT</a>
The URL after the href tag is the one you should have copied above, and you can simply paste it in to make sure that you do not make a mistake. The text, DOWNLOAD THE DOCUMENT, can be anything you like. Remember to close the code with the </a> tag too.
Use a Custom Links Menu
This is one of the easiest ways to add the download. You can add a field to a new or existing menu and use that instead of having to code the link.
